The Department of Fisheries and Marine Bioscience (FMB) at Jessore University of Science & Technology (JUST) emerges as one of the top fisheries departments in Bangladesh which focuses an integrated, most diversified and global demanding program B.Sc. Honors in Fisheries. It was established in 2008, since the establishment of this University and the medium of instruction is English. Semester system is followed in this department, just like other departments of JUST.

Department’s challenges: Sustainable livelihood for the people of Bangladesh by ensuring higher environmental standards in aspects of wild and fish farming, sustainable fisheries, aquaculture and marine bioscience must stand up to a hard evaluation of any environmental situations of the world.

Admission: After passing Higher Secondary Certificate examination interested students can apply for the undergraduate program (B.Sc. Hons. in Fisheries). They need to apply through the official procedure by filling admission form, once in a year. Required amount of students (45) are selected according to the merit list result of admission test. However this department is under the faculty of Biological Sciences and Technology. Detail admission notice can be found on JSTU official website (www.just.edu.bd).

Course outline and degree offered: The syllabus of this department provides a fundamental knowledge and comprehensive research on aquaculture, aquaculture engineering, fisheries conservations, fisheries managements, hatchery management, quality controls of fishery products, harvesting technology, nutrition’s, fisheries microbiology, fish genetics, fisheries biotechnology, aquatic health management, fish immunology, shellfish biology, ornamental fish culture, marine bioscience, coastal aquaculture, mariculture, oceanography, quality controls of fishery products, sustainable livelihood and other related areas.

The department offers 4 years integrated Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Masters in Fisheries (major in aquaculture / fish biology and genetics / fisheries management/fish technology) degrees to the students.

Researches: Department of Fisheries and Marine Bioscience at JUST offers tremendous research opportunities to the researchers. Researchers can conduct research under both laboratory and field situation. There is a well developed laboratory and sufficient experiment ponds in the JUST campus. Another world

class laboratory is under construction and will be completed by the end of this year (2012), financially supported by HEQEP. Already researches regarding captive breeding, aquaculture, fish diseases, aquatic biodiversity etc. have been initiated by the researchers of the department.
