The book entitled “Genetics of Aquaculture and Fisheries Management” by Dr. M.S. Shah is published at the month of June 2010. This book is mainly based on basic and applied genetics for aquaculture and fisheries management at university level. As a result it is very helpful for the students, researchers and teachers of aquaculture, fisheries management as well as fisheries genetics.
In the foreword of this book, AKM Aminul Haque, national professor of Bangladesh, mentions the subject matter covered in the book already great interest among the fisheries scientists and aquaculturists across the globe. The topics deals with in the book have very thoughtfully selected by the author and cover all the basic and applied aspects and issues of fish genetics. Though specially prepared for the undergraduate and post-graduate students of fisheries disciplines at the universities.
In the prologue of this book, Author states the book is principally based on the syllabuses of fish genetics followed in the university undergraduate curricula. There is not, though, enough scope for inclusion in a text book of topics on regional context, however, in this book, as it is pointed out in the foregoing, efforts have been made to include chapters that could significantly meet the demand of a core text book in both vary basic and applied aspects of fish genetics for aquaculture and fisheries management taught at the undergraduate level curricula of fisheries students in the universities of Bangladesh.
From the profile of the author of this book we know that Professor Dr. Md. Saifuddin Shah was born in 1951 in a respectable family in Dinajpur. Dr. Shah obtained his graduate with honours in Fisheries in 1972 and master in Fisheries Biology and Limnology in 1973 from the BAU. He obtained a fellowship in teaching in 1974 in the the department of Fisheries Biology and Limnology, letter he become lecture in 1076 and assistant professor in 1980. He had been away for doing Ph.D. in Fisheries Genetics under Commonwealth Scholarship program in the University of Wales, UK. He also been away to carryout post doctoral researches in fish genetics and biotechnology. Now he is working as a professor of FMRT discipline and Vice-chancellor of Khulna University. Dr. Shah had changes in his career between teaching and research management and this has greatly enabled him to attain a unique blend of experiences about academic and research management in fisheries in Bangladesh context. The present book is an obvious reflection of the splendid ideas and in-depth knowledge he has acquired during his long 36 years professional experiences, as a truly outstanding teacher and researcher in the field of fisheries.
