Fourth Biennial Fisheries Conference and Research Fair 2010 of Bangladesh Fisheries Research Forum (BFRF) was held on January 20-21, 2010 at the auditorium of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC), Farmgate, Dhaka.
Representatives from a large number of key relevant stakeholder organizations viz. university fisheries departments (University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh Agricultural University, University of Dhaka, Khulna University, Chittagong University and Hazi Md. Danesh Science and Technology University), Department of Fisheries (DoF), Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI), Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC), Development Partners, BRDB, LGED, BWDB, NGOs and private sector were present in the program.
In the very beginning, the program stated with recitation from the Holy Quran followed by Welcome address by Dr. Kawser Ahmed (General Secretary of BFRF and Associate Professor of Department of Fisheries, University of Dhaka). On the first day at the inaugural session a key note on “Diversification of Coastal Aquaculture” was presented by Dr. Md. Jahangir Alam, Chief Scientific Officer, BFRI, Brackishwater Station, Paikgacha (Khulna). Dr. M.G. Hussain (Director General of BFRI) and Dr. Wais Kabir (Executive Chairman of BARC) delivered their valuable speech next to the key note presentation. Later, Chief Guest of the conference, honorable Minister Md. Abdul Latif Biswas, MP, Ministry of Fisheries and Animal Resources, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh delivered his speech focusing different aspects of fisheries with special emphasis of climate change issue. At the last part of inaugural session, Prof. Dr. Md. Saifuddin Shah, President, BFRF and Vice-chancellor, Khulna University delivered his valuable speech. On the second day another key note on “Climate Change and Fisheries” was presented by Prof. Dr. Md. Saifuddin Shah.
Research findings on different aspects were nicely presented under different technical sessions of the two days long conference. The Department of Fisheries under the University of Rajshahi successfully drew attention of the researchers, academicians, extension and development partners well while presenting findings especially on climate change issues under Barind area and aquaculture in ponds and rice fields by the poor Adivasi households in Northwest Bangladesh.
Prof. Dr. Aminul Islam of Bangladesh Agricultural University and Prof. Dr. Shahadat Ali of Dhaka University were awarded by BFRF for their valuable contributions in fisheries sector in this conference.
