Book profile- Introduction to fish species diversity: Sunamganj haor region within CBRMP’s working area

“Introduction to fish species diversity: Sunamganj haor region within CBRMP’s working area” presents mainly a checklist of fish species of Sunamganj haor region within CBRMP’s working area and their profile (taxonomic position including English, Bangla and scientific name; fin formula; body description; reproduction; habitats;  distribution; IUCN/conservation status; threats etc.). A total of 126 fish species from 39 families are included in this book which were recorded from Sunamganj haor region. The inclusion of colourfull photographs including measuring scale of all fish species is very constructive to identity of local fish fauna of Bangladesh.  The addition of Bangle version of most of all information is very much helpful to Bangle speaking and reading people of Bangladesh and other countries.

William J Collis (Director, the worldfish center, Bangladesh and South Asia) states (in preface of this book) that the book will be of interest to wider audiences involved in fisheries management, research and study, and will help to support assessments of bio-diversity in order to enhance the management and productivity of open water fisheries resources. SK Md. Mohsin (Project Director, Community based research management project- LGED) mentions (in foreword of this book) that prior to finalize the book rigorous reviews have been carried out participation of local fishers, scientists, officials from department of fisheries and universities to make the book authentic in all aspects. So it is supposed that the book would be helpful to those specifically working for biodiversity conservation and to the teachers and students of the fisheries and natural sciences as well as to the general readers.

This book is published by Community based resources management project, LGED, Agargaon, Dhaka 1207, Bangladesh in the month of June 2011 and edited by Dr. M. Niamul Naser, Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Dhaka and AKM Firoz Khan, Project leader, Worldfish center.  The allover credit is gone to Balaram Mahalder and MG Mustafa under a research team of the worldfish center for conducting research and providing text to publish a brilliant book like this.
