Labeo dyocheilus
Labeo dyocheilus

Thirty species of fishes have been listed as extinct in inland waterbodies specially rivers of Bangladesh (Hossain, 2014). Famous Bangladeshi fisheries biodiversity scientist Dr. Hossain (Dr. Mostafa Ali Reza Hossain, Professor of Fisheries Biology and Genetics, BAU) also reported that more than hundred species of riverine fishes have been gone to under threat to extinct. According to Hossain (2014), a list of extinct fishes of Bangladesh is presented bellow. Here habitat, geographical distribution and global conservation status of IUCN and national conservation status of IUCN Bangladesh have been added.

Among the above listed fish, two fishes (Nangra bucculentaand Nangra ornata) are endemic in Bangladesh. These fishes are recorded only single time from Bangladesh as well as world by Roberts and Ferraris in 1998. Rest twenty eight species of fishes also found in different adjacent as well as east-southern countries of Bangladesh. If we take necessary action to introduce these fishes to Bangladesh, it may be recovered.

Note that, according to Rahman (1989) and Rahman (2005) Bangladesh has 260 and 265 number of freshwater fish species orderly. On the other hand 267, 289 and 293 species of riverine fishes have been recorded by Hossain (2014), Hossain and Wahab (2012) and Hossain et al (2012) respectively. Moreover only 251 species of freshwater fishes are comprised in the book entitled “Encyclopedia of Flora and Fauna of Bangladesh” Volume 23 (Freshwater Fishes) including exotic fishes.
